Lauren Loughlin- MR TOAD

An Adventure for Mr. Toad
Mr. Toad is a football sized foam replica of a toad with warts and all. He and I have a long history together. Ever since I was little, I held a strong fascination for frogs and toads. When I was younger, I would spend hours outside by the pond trying to catch frogs. Of course, it was always catch and release. I was about five years old when Mr. Toad and I became acquainted and then shortly after became fast friends. I found him on vacation in Myrtle Beach and for the next couple of years Mr. Toad was my faithful companion and friend.  He was eventually replaced, which all beloved childhood toys usually are and for the last decade he has been left sitting on a shelf, no longer going on the adventures he once delighted in. As I prepare to graduate college, begin a new chapter, and take the next step into adulthood, I thought Mr. Toad should be dusted off and brought out one last time to experience a day in the life of a college student on the weekend.

Mr. Toad is just hanging out on a
wall at Siena College while he acquaints himself with his surroundings. He has not been out in public in a very long time and is enjoying the fresh air.

Mr. Toad wanted to spend some quality time with my roommates and get to know them better.

Nobody enjoys a nice strong cappuccino as much as Mr. Toad. He was feeling a little tired due to the excitement of his adventure so he ordered an extra shot of espresso.

Mr. Toad being an avid Beatle's listener could not pass up the opportunity to imitate their famous crosswalk picture.

Mr. Toad has not enjoyed frozen yogurt in years. He loves TCBY because they have gummy worms. Everyone knows frogs enjoy a nice fat worm every now and then.

Mr. Toad was feeling very feisty with all of the fresh air and excitement and was breaking out his best jokes and impersonations. He is also quite the flirt.

Since being on a college campus, Mr. Toad wanted to imbibe in alcohol consumption and try his first beer. It turns out that Mr. Toad is a light weight and was feeling quite tipsy after that one beer.

Mr. Toad had a great adventure. He was very happy to get out and experience college life. Mr. Toad made memories that he can now look fondly back on, but he was tired and by the end of the day, he was ready to return home to his seat on the shelf.

  1. Great project! This is not only a good idea, but well executed and very funny. You did a great job of summarizing a day's adventure with him. I especially like the ones of him on the crosswalk and drinking.

  2. Lauren, very creative post. I like the idea of using the prop to tell the story about your everyday college experiences. I find this to be a creative, funny, and well thought out project. I especially like the second to last picture with the beer. I love this picture because of the way you captured your friends laughing with Mr. Toad. This picture is in great focus and it also has great context with the wind blowing your friends hair, being outside, and your friends laughing. I also love the love the last picture, the shot from behind. With the gold husks creating an awesome background, you really focus on the three objects of the photo. Also, to take an inanimate object and think to take a shot from behind as if he were real is funny and definitely shows you were thinking outside the box.

  3. I really enjoyed this post. I really liked the different activities that Mr. Toad did. I especially liked the first photo of just Mr. Toad and the coffee one. I thought the angles of these two pictures were really good and creative.
