Lindsay Kuhl- Whats Your Sign?

For my documentary project I chose to photograph a group of my friends allowing them to pick any word they would use to describe themselves. I wanted the pictures to show how we all differ from each other and how a simple word can show how you’re feeling or what you are feeling at any specific moment. A picture is worth a thousand words and shows us how such a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image.  Some of my friends chose to pick a word that describes where they come from, what they are good at or how they are feeling. I think these documentary photos show us how each of us are unique in very different ways.
All of us like to feel that we are in some way unique individuals. The way we dress, the cars we drive, the things we do help us define our uniqueness. Some of us are shy, outgoing, wild, creative, and funny. I wanted these pictures to show and bring out the different personalities between my friends and what it is that makes us our own entire person.  Our characters are all different because they are formed when we are young and our family background and our environment contribute to shape our personality, so we differ from people who had a very different background and lived in different times. The pictures I am showing to you demonstrate how ten people differ from one another and what it is that makes them all different from one another.

  1. Great project! This is a very unique documentary of your friends and I like that you did it in black and white. My favorite shot is of 'Itchy'.. Good job of portraying everyones individuality.

  2. I really like the idea behind this project. I think it is very funny and unique. I like how the pictures are in black and white. It gives this project a very serious appearance. I also really liked that all of the photos had the same brick backdrop. I think this was very effective because it allows one to focus more on the person and the sign that they are holding up. I liked "The Self" picture a lot at the end. It speaks to how no matter how many different ways people can describe themselves, in the the end, they always end up being their true self, which is a sum of the parts.

  3. I love the idea behind this blog because it showed off each individual in a different way just by the simple setup that was added for their words. Being in black and white also gave the blog something different because it makes you see them in a different way. If the photos were in color I feel that their personalities would not have shined through as well because we would focus on the colors. I also thought that using the same background for each tied them together well. My favorite would have to be "The Drunk" just because it gives a hint back to a normal college students life at times.

  4. This was a great idea! I liked that you thought about the individuality that everyone has, and what makes them who they are. Making all of the pictures in black and white was very effective. These are very simple photos but they are very strong in what they are trying to portray. My favorite picture was the last one because no matter what word you use to describe yourself it is what makes you, you.

  5. Innovative idea and great concept! I enjoyed the use of the index cards and the fact that you used the black and white filter making the pictures seem similar but still completely different at the same time. A unique way of displaying personality traits, I think this project shows how eclectic everyone is and how we must embrace who we really are. The drunk might be my favorite picture is this project.

  6. Lindsay this ia a really awesome idea. I think you pulled it off nicely too. This has the perfect amount of funny and seriousness to it to make it fascinating. I loved all of the photos, but I love how you had the picture, and the object of the photo, compliment the sign. I thought the itchy sign was fantastic because he was itching his beard (funny and relevant). I also love the "inactive" photo. It is a great pose for the sign that she chose. Having a similar background with changing objects and signs was awesome and it really makes one think what their sign would be. Also, great title for the project.

  7. This is another unique idea that allows the audience to learn more about the models than they may even after an hour of talking to them. I like that all are in black and white and using the same background, so as to not distract from the word carried by the person. This is a very richard avedon-esque style of photography that I love.

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed your blog entry. The fact that you chose the photos in black and white, I think makes this story that much more powerful. The uniqueness to each person is astounding and I really enjoyed seeing how people describe themselves. I am unsure what one word I would use to describe myself! I also liked how the people posed or were dressed for the word they chose! For example, the kid in the suit, supporting his professionalism - and the kid with the beer and solo cup for drunk! I just thought the poses supported these and made them stand out more! Well done!
